Help!!

Hi Friends!

Looks like life as I know it may be about to come to an end. Today my mom and my kousin Layla's mom talked about putting the two of us on a raw diet. Since Layla and I are both becoming more substantial every day (we say it's because we haven't had our walks for so long due to our excessive winter weather), our moms think that we need a change in cuisine. I suggested Mediterranean, but mom has something else in mind. RAW FOOD! YIKES!!!!!

Koobie's Mom: I won't make such a drastic change in little Koobie's life without first giving it a lot of thought. Now she is eating 4 ounces of Science Diet Lite Chicken kibble and numerous treats (grandpa carries them in his pockets) along with four ounces of cooked low fat ground turkey breast. She gets one Beggin Strip and two Guilt Free treats around 10 PM. She also manages to squeeze whatever she can out of grandpa and me. She is quite good at this.

Koobie: If you remember, you already put me on a diet last year. I have to eat this diet dog food and diet treats that you keep feeding me. Isn't all this diet stuff working?

Koobie's Mom: Koobie already eats some apple and banana almost daily. And she will eat most vegetables. It is the meat and bones in the raw diet that I am concerned about. Many of you have experience with raw diets. I welcome your ideas, thoughts, suggestions, or other information that you can share with me. Do you think that a raw diet will work for a spoiled but lovable two-year old wire fox terrier? Will she eat it? What problems will she have getting used to it? What problems will I have? What kind of treats can we give her? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a raw diet for a dog like Koobuss? Any input that you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Koobie: Bananas? Apples? Maybe this won't be so bad after all. Is ice cream on this diet?

Koobie, I don't know what's up with this diet thingy but I'm put on a diet once again. But hey I tell my Mommy, I am preggers! Obviously I need more food!!! But she said not yet. Only if my tummy is getting bigger & if I am confirmed preggers. Sheesh!

Well, my hoomans have never really believed in raw diet. Mommy said, we are not wolves. We are domesticated dogs. But don't get her wrong, she is not against BARF at all, it's just that she doesn't really believe in it. Mommy always prefers cooked food. Many people say that after the meat is cooked, all the nutrients in it will be destroyed so it's not very healthy compared to eating it raw. Yes, some nutrients will be destroyed but not all. But after cooking, it's safer as many bacterias from the raw blood & from people's dirty hands from handling them are destroyed. Many Pedigree dogs get diarrhea from eating raw meat but this usually happens when the dog has just switched to it. Diarrhea can go on for a few days to a week. Those of you who eat BARF, correct me if I'm wrong. Pedigree dogs' tummies just cannot take raw meat as well as the mongrels or strays coz they are hardy dogs from living on the streets & living in a hard life & eating rotten foods from rubbish everyday so their immune systems are very strong. Throughout our lives, we've been eating home cooked food mixed with kibbles & sometimes we eat rubbish too like fried chicken backsides(oh we love that!), cakes & many more but still, we are very healthy dogs with no immune system problems or whatsoever. Remember that time when Chloe had to do a blood transfusion for our dog friend who had tick fever? She was chosen compared to the other dogs that came along for the testing too(I know some of them eat raw diet while others ate commercial foods) but Chloe was chosen in the end because she was very healthy & she had good blood, eventhough she was a little overweight. My Mommy believes feeding us a little bit of everything. We don't just stick to one thing. We get the best from both worlds! And sometimes we get raw chicken necks but each time, we get explosive diarrhea. Oops! We're just not used to it.

There are a few doggies here in DWB that eat purely on BARF only so maybe they can give you better advise. I know BARF can do you good. But I guess, any food can too. Good luck on switching your diet Koobie!

Hi Koobie!

I was a couple pounds overweight (well, if you look at breed standards for Cairns, I should weigh 14lbs. exactly. I'm a trim and healthy 22 lbs!) and Mommy switched me to Wellness Light food. I get 1/3 cup in the morning and another in the evening. Then a few low-cal training treats. And I lost 3 lbs. pretty quickly!

Your pal,

Petey

Dear Koobie...Do you want to join the Substantial Wires Club? I am a charter member, even though I have lost a few pounds in Mayemphis. We tried a number of foods..Me and Teka now get Nutro Max Lite mixed with either green beans or pumpkin mush. I get 1 cup a day, and Teka gets 2/3 cup a day (dry stuff) Muzzer has cut waaaay back on the treaties, and if we get kongs, she holds back some of our kibble to use as the base. I also get about 1/4 tsp of peanut butter (she thinks she is hiding my pill) My favorite snackies are frozen carrot sticks that muzzer puts in the freezer for me. Teka prefers dead birds.

My friend Wally eats Raw...his meals look scrumptious. He lives in DE. That is close to PA right? Maybe his ma ape can help.

Hey dude. Khyra sent me this way. Check out my blog - start reading from day 1. It's all about our start on the raw diet and what we've learned along the way, plus it includes posts of all the research my humans did on supplements, health issues and stuff. My mom researched for about a year before starting my bro and me on the diet and then decided that we should chronicle it all because it can be a scary and overwhelming thing to start. We wanted folks considering the diet to know exactly what we went through.

The difference it's made in our lives has been dramatic to say the least. The benefits we've experienced are too many to list here (click "benefits of raw" on our labels list if you'd like to see). In short, I have NEVER been better, and my brother's blood panels for the first time show perfect numbers. We are shiny handsome beasts now!

Shoot an email over if you have any questions. We'd be happy to let you know what we did and what our experiences were. And it's all about the research when you start and we're all about education about canine nutrition and needs. Regardless of whether your folks choose raw or cooked diet - if they're going to make your food they've got to get their nutritional know-how!

We're so excited for you and your new diet! Hooray to your folks for taking you off that Science Diet stuff. The "raw community" views that brand as one of the worst there is and so we applaud your bravery in moving into a whole new world of real food. I'm sure your folks will be AMAZED at the difference they see!

Later my fellow feaster!

hey Koobie, Since I haven't had treats Koobie (I would only have 2 small treats a day) I've easily lost over 3lbs in just 2 months!Def the treats that pile on the weight but I wasn't overweight to begin with!! I don't eat raw, I have an organic, holistic wheat free kibble from a specialist UK vet supplier, often in my dog pyramid (Nina Ottoson)or in treat ball cos I'm really ALWAYS hungry and that makes me eat slow and excercises me too!!Mom gives me treats of carrot sticks and holds some of my kibble allowance back for treats/kongs sometimes too like Guss.

Good luck Koobie. Let us know how you get on. But you look cute and cuddly to me anyways.

Hey Koobs, raw diet is awesome! All of us here at our house eat raw diet and it's da best! Even our DawgDr says we are the healthiest dogs that come into his office! Feather Louise, the oldest Bullie in our house, is the reason DawgMom switched us over. She had that demodectic mange real bad, DawgMom had to take her to DawgDr every week for it. She had skin infections all the time and she was miserable. So DawgMom started searching the internet and decided to try the raw diet. Within a month, Feather was off all her nasty medicine for the mange and she has never had a problem with it again. That was 3.5 years ago! She has a beautiful shiny coat now and is so much happier. Pappy is 4th generation raw fed, he has never had anything else, neither has his Mama, or his grandmama or his great-grandmama. The judges in the dog shows comment on how healthy he looks and how shiny his coat is. DawgMom says go here http://bestfrisbeedogs.com/diets.html and read about the diet. DawgMom said you can pee-mail us too, we will help you. I promise, you will love it and you will be so much healthier. I mean with raw diet yer DawgMom KNOWS what you are eating, with kibbles who knows what's in there? Feel free to ask us anything. You can have treats too that are raw. DawgMom makes our treats for us since Feather can't have grains either. It's easy and ooooohhhh so good. Our pee-mail is

Hope to hear from you

Sorry we can't help woo out with a raw diet, but we do hear that adding green beans to take the place of some kibble can help shed some pounds. Our mom said she will be interested to follow your progress if woo make the switch. Good luck.

Sweet Koobie!

I'm glad that Stanislaw and his peeps are in touch with you (ieatrawmeat@blogspot.com/)! They are very good about getting you to the actual research they did so you can make your own decision

I've been on a raw diet for a year and a half. Wally the Corgador and his ma ape were very helpful to us. My teeth are sparkling white (no need to brush or have my vet clean them) and my vet says I have the healthiest coat and look like a svelte showdog (just the right weight for my size). Stella is also on the same diet I'm on.

I'll send you a peemail with a little more information about what I experienced when I started eating raw food.

One of the best reasons I can think of for eating this way (other than the fact that it tastes so stinkin' good and the right kinds of raw bones are good for you) is that terriers are prone to skin & allergy problems, and most of those tend to be aggravated by starches, and especially by grains. Most (not all) commercial dog food has loads of grain in it, and my girl is trying to avoid going through with me what she went through with her Rosie girl (Airedale) when she developed skin allergies and yeast problems.

Like I said, I'll shoot you a peemail.

Goober love & smooches,
Stanley

We eat Solid Gold Barking at the Moon. We also eat anything else we can get in our mouths. We can't be much help. My nephew Peanut had a raw diet for awhile, but if I remember correctly it was a lot of work.

I don't have experience with raw diets and therefore cannot comment. But Sola puts on about 80-10 pounds every winter and loses it in spring :)

I don't eat raw, but mama and dad do cook all of my food for me.

It's a nice stew of (usually) chicken breast, yam, whatever other veggies are in the house, and either rice or pasta (basically like a big stew just without the herbs and no onions or garlic). Sometimes they change it up and use things like beef heart, tripe or liver instead of the chicken (yum for me, kind of smelly for them).

They make enough for a week at a time, freeze it into little bags, then thaw one out per day. Works really well and it's DELICIOUS!

Oh and for treats I get dehydrated chicken and beef heart. Yummy and chewy and very satisfying. Also occasionally some bones from the butcher... my favorite!

Hope that helps ya Koobie :)

Love,
Bogart

Koobie...oh we are so jelly cuz Mumsie sez there are too many of us to have us runnin' round eatin' chicken wings...looks like Gooberstan talked to ya...he's an expert...also Babystan's breeder feeds raw...she'd be a good resource...she swears by it!!!

IF you can get ur mom and Grandpa to CUT OUT THE TREATS...you probably wouldn't hafta change ur diet at all...plus the old tennis ball chasey game inside three times a day keeps us in shape when it's rotten out...

But raw is supposed to be fab...but if ya eat too many treats with it, you still might not lose any weight...not that I think you should Koobie...I think you are bootiful just as you are!!!

Love ya sweet Girl..
